CONNECTION BEFORE CONVERSION™

Better Relationships Create Better Opportunities.

You do not need to turn every conversation into a sale. You do need to understand the relationship in front of you.

Connection Before Conversion™ helps entrepreneurs, leaders, and customer-facing professionals become more intentional about how they connect, build trust, recognize relationship types, and identify opportunities without forcing the transaction.

Because sometimes the biggest opportunity in the room is not the person you are trying to sell to. It may be the person who:

  • introduces you
  • refers you
  • collaborates with you
  • advocates for you
  • connects you to the person you actually need to meet

WHEN CONNECTION ISN’T BECOMING RELATIONSHIP

You’re Meeting People. But What Happens After the Conversation?

  • You attend the events.
  • You exchange contact information.
  • You connect on LinkedIn.
  • You meet potential clients.
  • You tell people what you do.

But somewhere between meeting the person and building the relationship, the connection disappears.

MAYBE YOU ARE

  • Networking Without a Clear Purpose

Meeting people but not knowing what kind of relationship you are actually building.

  • Pitching Too Soon

Moving toward the business conversation before trust or curiosity has had time to develop.

  • Struggling to Follow Up

Leaving a great conversation and then not knowing what to say next.

  • Unsure Who Is an Opportunity

Assuming only potential customers are valuable relationships.

  • Missing the Cues

Noticing that something changed in the conversation but not knowing what it means.

  • Hesitating to Ask

Building relationships but becoming uncomfortable when it is time to discuss business.

  • Collecting Contacts, Not Building Relationships

Having plenty of names in your phone but very few meaningful connections.

Connection Before Conversion helps you slow down long enough to understand the relationship before deciding what should happen next.

NOT EVERY CONNECTION IS A CUSTOMER

Learn to Recognize the Relationship.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make in business is assuming every valuable relationship needs to become a sale.

A connection may be a…

Networking and connecting
  • 01

    CLIENT

Someone who may need the service, expertise, or solution you provide.

  • 02

    REFERRAL PARTNER

Someone who may never hire you but knows people who should.

  • 03

    COLLABORATOR

Someone whose expertise, audience, resources, or ideas complement yours.

  • 04

    CONNECTOR

Someone who naturally brings people, organizations, and opportunities together.

  • 05

    ADVOCATE

Someone who believes in your work and talks about you when you are not in the room.

  • 06

    RESOURCE

Someone who has information, expertise, access, or insight that may help you move forward.

  • 07

    PEER

Someone walking a similar path who can become part of your professional ecosystem.

  • 08

    RELATIONSHIP

Someone worth knowing even when there is no immediate business opportunity.

Not every connection is meant to become a customer.

But every connection has the potential to become part of your ecosystem.

CONNECTION BEFORE CONVERSION™

The Relationship Comes Before the Ask.

Connection is not about pretending to be interested in someone so you can eventually sell them something.

It is about becoming genuinely curious.

ConnectionRelationshipOpportunity
  • Who is this person?
  • What matters to them?
  • What are they trying to accomplish?
  • What kind of relationship might make sense here?
  • Is there a way I can provide value?
  • Is there an opportunity worth exploring?

And sometimes:

Is this simply a relationship worth building?

THE GOAL IS NOT

to avoid business.

THE GOAL IS

to make the transition toward business feel natural—because you first took the time to understand the person and the relationship.

THE SIGNATURE CONNECTION BEFORE CONVERSION™ PROCESS

Notice. Connect. Understand. Nurture. Recognize. Ask.

  1. 1NOTICE
  2. 2CONNECT
  3. 3UNDERSTAND
  4. 4NURTURE
  5. 5RECOGNIZE
  6. 6ASK
1
NOTICE

Pay Attention Before You Assume.

Notice the person’s tone, body language, engagement, questions, energy, and what may not be said directly. The goal is observation—not mind-reading.

ASK YOURSELF

  • What am I noticing?
  • What changed?
  • Are they engaged? Are they hesitant?
  • What might I need to ask instead of assume?
2
CONNECT

Start With the Person.

Become curious. Ask better questions. Listen. Find shared interests, experiences, challenges, or values.

Connection is often built through the small moments that tell someone:

I see you as a person, not just an opportunity.

3
UNDERSTAND

What Relationship Is This?

Before deciding what you want from someone, determine what kind of relationship may naturally exist.

  • Client
  • Connector
  • Collaborator
  • Referral partner
  • Peer
  • Resource
  • Advocate

Understanding the relationship helps you decide the next appropriate step.

4
NURTURE

Relationships Need Somewhere to Go.

A connection becomes a relationship through intentional follow-up. That may mean:

  • Sending something useful
  • Checking in
  • Making an introduction
  • Continuing a conversation
  • Supporting their work
  • Inviting them into another relevant space

Follow-up should deepen the relationship—not simply remind them you sell something.

5
RECOGNIZE

Learn to Notice Opportunity.

Opportunities often appear inside conversation.

  • Someone mentions a challenge.
  • An introduction is offered.
  • A collaboration becomes obvious.
  • A customer expresses another need.
  • A contact reveals access to a market you are trying to enter.

The ability to recognize opportunity starts with paying attention.

6
ASK

Connection Does Not Mean Avoiding the Sale.

At some point, the relationship may call for an ask.

  • Would you like to work together?
  • Could I send you more information?
  • Would an introduction make sense?
  • Would you like to continue this conversation?
  • Can we explore what this might look like?

Connection Before Conversion does not remove the conversion. It helps you know when the conversion actually makes sense.

READ THE ROOM WITHOUT WRITING THE STORY

Observation Before Assumption.

One of the key skills within Connection Before Conversion™ is learning to notice what is happening without immediately deciding why it is happening.

THESE ARE OBSERVATIONS

  • Someone crosses their arms.
  • Someone becomes quieter.
  • Someone looks away.
  • Someone suddenly becomes more engaged.

THE MISTAKE IS TURNING THEM INTO A STORY

  • “They don’t like me.”
  • “They can’t afford it.”
  • “They’re not interested.”
  • “They’re ready to buy.”
INSTEAD, LEARN TO ASK
  1. What did I notice?
  2. What else could it mean?
  3. What question could help me understand?

This is where awareness becomes one of your strongest relationship-building skills.

THE STORY THAT TAUGHT ME CONNECTION BEFORE CONVERSION

I Learned to Read the Person Before Judging the Prospect.

During my time working in timeshare sales in Las Vegas, a family came in that included a woman using a wheelchair.

There were assumptions about whether they were likely to buy. But instead of beginning with the assumptions, I focused on the people.

  • I slowed down.
  • Paid attention.
  • Adjusted how I approached the conversation.
  • And gave them the space to experience the interaction in a way that worked for them.

What stayed with me was bigger than the sale. It was the reminder that we can miss people—and opportunities—when we decide who someone is before we take the time to understand them.

Awareness before assumption.
Presence before pressure.
Read the person, not just the prospect.

That experience became one of the foundations of Connection Before Conversion™.

CONNECTION DOESN’T END WITH THE CONVERSATION

A Contact Is Not Yet a Relationship.

Meeting someone is the beginning. The relationship is built in what happens next.

  • The follow-up
  • The curiosity
  • The consistency
  • The introduction
  • The value exchanged
  • The trust developed over time

And eventually, when appropriate—

the ask.

Connect first. Then recognize what the relationship can become.

YOUR NEXT CONNECTION

Who Might You Be Overlooking?

  • A potential client?
  • A collaborator?
  • A referral partner?
  • A connector?
  • Someone who knows the person you need to meet?
  • Or simply a relationship worth building?

Your next opportunity may already be inside your network.
